OUR STORY

We are Summit's 9th grade. innovative and creative entrepreneurs with a passion for coffee and giving back to the world.

For nearly a decade, Summit’s 9th-grade students have visited and supported the breathtaking cloud forest of Costa Rica. In this unprecedented year, we were unable to travel. But our support and service continue in a new and delicious way. This year, Summit’s 9th graders took on the challenge of starting and running our own business. We roast, grind, package, and sell single-origin, small-batch coffee from around the world. The Santa Elena Cloud Forest in Costa Rica receives nearly a quarter of the proceeds from the coffee we sell.  Aside from creativity and fun, this experience teaches students entrepreneurship skills, like advertising, marketing, sales, and finance. We also learned life skills like leadership and practical skills like roasting and grinding tasty coffee. With no previous business experience, we encountered some roadblocks. At first, we struggled to organize jobs and workflow. As the challenges come, we are ready to brainstorm ideas to overcome them. We recently launched our first sale to Summit faculty. Our product received high praise and we made our first donation to the Cloud Forest. We are ecstatic to be able to start selling to everyone soon!

PROCESS

ROASTING AND PACKAGING

Students roast a variety of coffee, including beans from Columbia, Guatemala, Brazil, El Salvador, Ethiopia, and Tanzania.
At the Summit Coffee Project, students design their own logos and package their own coffee. We weigh and measure our coffee with care, grind a portion of our roast, and then pour half a pound into each bag. We place our signature sticker and logo on the bag and label it with the orgin and date or roasting, to keep you informed.
